Since it is the start of a new year we are all trying to find new ways to better ourselves and to make this year even greater than the last. There are so many things in this world that can leave us in a negative state of mind. Poverty, Drug Addition, Abuse, Loss of loved ones; but we can’t let our experiences keep us from living full, happy and healthy lives. In order to change the outcome of our current circumstances, we must change our perspectives. So to kick off this new year we are going to list 5 ways how to stop thinking negative thoughts and get on to being a better you!

1. Make a gratitude list

Start off by making a list of everything you are grateful for having in your life. No one’s life is perfect but when you take a moment to write down each thing in your life that you are grateful for. You will start to realize how life is not as bad as you think. You could do this at the start of each day. Write down a few things that you are grateful for like, “I had a good night sleep last night” or “That was a really good dinner I had last night.” Focusing on the positive things in your life will bring those things to the forefront in your mind and your prospective will be shifted which will leave little room for negative thoughts.

2. Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are specific statements that you can either write down or say out loud to essentially help you visualize the way you would like your life to be. For instance, if you say “I can do this,” over and over again you will believe what you are telling yourself and your actions and thought processes will reflect your affirmations. It is basically a self-fulling prophecy. Try It!

3. Trying new things

This one is my favorite! Trying new things not only keeps you busy it keeps your mind engaged in learning something new. If your mind is engaged in learning something new you will not have time to think of anything negative. Try reading a book or taking a dance class. Try making a recipe you have never made before. Doing something you are afraid to do. In facing your fear and learning about something new it will keep your mind active and busy, this will help you stop thinking negative thoughts.

4. Giving Back to your community through volunteering

The more positive energy you put out there the more you get back. By volunteering at your local soup kitchen, homeless shelter or clothes drive you are helping someone else get what they need in order to get through this thing we call life. Doing positive things for people generates positive energy. Try giving back to places where you’re especially familiar with the neighborhood and/or people living in that neighborhood. This type of giving allows for a genuinely deeper connection to the reason why you’re giving back as well as generate positive energy and positive thinking.

5. Meditate/Journal

Meditation is different to different people. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to clear all thoughts from your mind. A lot of negative thinking originates from stress and a lot of stress originates from disorganization and confusion. If you are able to mediate by getting to a quiet place, taking out a sheet of paper, and writing down each negative thought you have at that moment. Next, write down why you feel that way and what you could do to change it. This will at least help you come to some sort of resolution. Understand why you are having those types of thoughts and allow you to see the bright side by coming to some type of conclusion or resolve of that issue.

Hopefully, this has helped you jump start your new year with some ways to bypass the negativity and get to the positivity!
